Editing Lesson Blog

Today in Aice Media Studies, we learned how to edit. As soon as my classmates and I were seated, after the bell rung, my teacher started right away on her lecture. During this lecture she talked to us and showed us how to edit on her own computer. She connected it to a bigger board so that it can be displayed better to the class. She also showed us how to use the camera and all the qualities of it. Through this we were shown that the camera has a view finder, it is touch screen and it can be hand held. My teacher additionally went on to show us how the tripod works. If the camera is tightened correctly onto the tripod, it can help us with our shots. We will be able to do tilt (up and down) and pan (left and right) shots. You'll only understand these terms if you are in this class and or into filming. It's not terms that one can guess the definition of. Before taking this class, I would've never guessed that these were the definitions.
Furthermore, my classmates and I got instructions from our teacher on what we should do exactly when it comes to editing. First, we are to open up a folder and title it, then open up "Pinnacle Studio" that will soon be on the computer. We must use the same computer every time we edit. After all this is done, we are to insert SD card into SD card reader and look for the footage in 'DCIM'. If footage cannot be found there, go to Pinnacle Studio and look for 'AVCHD' then click on stream. If things pop up, we are to press “don’t show again”.  Now, we must highlight the videos we want and drag it into the folder mentioned in the beginning. SD reader can be taken out at this point as we no longer need it. We are to as my teacher likes to call it “Dump It” which means to get the footage off the camera onto the computer. After this we must import all the footage from the computer to “Pinnacle Studios.
To sum up, let’s talk about Pinnacle Studios in depth. It is an app on the desktop computer that we will use to edit our commercials in class. I have yet to see for myself and use the app of Pinnacle Studios but it was brought to our knowledge that one thing we have to be careful about with this editing app is that before we do anything, we must let it load completely. If not, the risk of losing our work is at an all time high. Wish me luck, I’m very impatient. Another thing we have to do is everytte we film, we must be sure to import all footage. The videos that has a check mark in the upper corner are the ones that will be kept. Pinnacle Studios has tracks where we can review our edits. Track 1 is open for titles. Track 2 is for footage and Track 3 is for sound. When an Orange-Yellowish bar is present, that means the videos are loaded. The razor blade above the tracks are to split the clip into two different clips and if anything it to be deleted, make sure an orange box is around it. The transitions that we are required to add to our commercial can be found when “clip” is right clicked on and “Open Affects Editor” pops up. Click on that and go from there. We are free to add any transitions we please. When all editing is done, we must export it. Go to file, save movie into folder and it’ll save onto the desktop. We have to make sure it says “MP4”. Then we’re done. If only that was the case. Quite frankly, my team members and I haven’t even started filming yet. Hopefully we are able to get through the filming process smoothly. Wish me luck... once again.
