Filming Blog

Unfortunately over this past weekend, my team mates and I did not get to film. Our original plan was for Jahnell and Micahia to meet up this weekend and film two parts of this music video so that we can get a head start. I’d rather us have too much clip than too little.  The two parts were the parts that I do not need to be apart of. The reason for my absence would also be because I was at work. We’re experiencing a time change where I live and the sun sets at 5:30. I typically get off of work at 4. By the time I go home, shower then go to our location the sun would be setting. Jahnell didn’t like the idea of this and therefore wanted to go ahead and film without me. I agreed with this.
We’ve decided to tell the story of the song. The two scenes that would’ve  been filmed would include Jahnell playing the role of the distressed, abused girlfriend and Micahia playing the role of the supportive friend trying to convince her friend to get out this situation. The reason why they weren’t able to film this past weekend is because Jahnell forgot the equipment in the classroom. I’m not sure how this happened being that I seen her seated with the equipment in front of her. When we do get to film, we will need the tripod and the camera. The tripod will be used to film each scene as we do not want it to be hand held like our commercial was. This time we will ensure that we get a tripod with legs that can extend equally. Also, we will plan accordingly and make sure to be able to fit the most important parts into the video. Most importantly, when we fill out the sheet in order to check out a camera, we will fill it out accordingly and with our new filming date. I think the reason why so many things went wrong is because last class, our teacher wasn’t here. Next class period she will be present and be there to remind the students to grab the equipment and even be in her classroom so that if we do forget it again, we can simply go back and retrieve it.
I am not too bummed out at the fact that we did not get to film this weekend. We already went over other plans in case this one did not work out. The alternative was to film throughout our thanksgiving break and that’s what we’ll do. Although it seems that Micahia and I work schedule seem to be clashing a lot, I’m positive that we’ll figure something out. Hopefully things work out. Another factor that we have to think about is Lesly’s schedule. Lesly is the guy that will be apart of our music video. We felt that we could not have a music video about domestic violence without an actual guy in it. We will film this weekend. Jahnell now has all the equipment and she’s made sure not to forget them this time.

Real Planning Blog

The location that my team mates and I decided to use is down town, near our city’s beach. That area is a one stop place. There’s everything and every store available. From ice cream, to pasta, to pizza, every type of food is available. Additionally, there’s beautiful stores filled with all types of clothing to satisfy the different styles there are. The scenery there is nothing short of amazing as you can walk on the sidewalks and enjoy the breeze as you watch the sun set. This will be useful as it will be included in our music video. Our two specific locations will be whichever Restuarant we decide to go to and the sidewalk. The restuarant will be where we film our dialogue and the sidewalk will be where we film us walking as a group. Hopefully we find someone nice enough to help us with this. I want it to be a tracking shot. Wish us luck with that.
As for health & safety, my team mates and I plan on ensuring that to the best of our ability. One of my team mates, Micahia, plans on catching a Lyft to our location. This is a car riding service that is connected to an app. On this app, the drivers info such as first and last name, license plate and car type is listed. We will try to ensure her safety by having her send us a screenshot of all this info. Also, we will call her and remain on the phone throughout the whole car ride. Depending on the specific day we choose to film, I may have to catch a Lyft also. I will send my sisters my location so that if anything were to happen to me, they can track me down. I’ll most likely be able to have my sister bring me though. As for my other team mate, Janell, she’ll be having her mom bring her. Either way it goes, I plan on having a 3 way call amongst the 3 of us as you never know what can happen.
The props that we will incorporate in our video are purses. We are young ladies in a music video, and we have to play the part correctly. Another prop we will have will be from the restaurant, such as silverware, napkins, and menus. This establishes our location and how we plan to do our video. The last prop we will have is a ring. This ring will be given to Kelly,  the young woman in the video who will be portraying the person that is in an abusive relationship.
Our costumes will pretty much stay the same throughout our whole video. In certain slides, Jahnell  be with Lesly, the young man who is playing the role as her boyfriend, in which She will wear a regular shirt and some pants, and he will have on a snapback, a t-shirt and some jeans. For the other slides, Micahia, Janell and I will all have on dresses.

Music Video Research Intro Blog

Hello everyone, I’m back! Told you guys I’d come with a surprise soon. This project is more exciting than the last and I honestly can’t wait to get started. The commercial for Dunkin Donuts threw me for a whirlwind that I wasn’t completely ready for but I am now. It prepared me for this, especially the editing process. The project I’m currently working on is with the same two girls. This project is a... MUSIC VIDEO! I know, I know.  I’m giving you big time producer vibes, aren’t I? I know, I know.
The song we have chosen is called Girls by Destiny’s Child. We picked this song because we wanted to bring awareness to the ongoing issue of domestic violence.

Genre:
The genre of our song is Rhythm and Blues. We chose this genre to get into the melody and talk about a deep and important matter.

Editing:
Editing in this video most likely had cuts in it. For example, they cut off the people talking in the background, so the song can be heard. They also had reverse shots in the video from them walking, to being back in the restaurant, and back to walking.

Camera Angle:
Camera Angles in this video include high angle, eye level and low angle. An example of this is the beginning of the music videos where it shows the group of girls in two different scenarios. One is where they’re at home watching TV and the next is them actually being in the TV show that’s playing for them on the other side of the world. They’re watching themselves.

Camera Shots:
Camera shots are long shot, close up, three shot, two shot,  point of view shot and medium close up.
This is also in the beginning in the video where the three woman are walking down the sidewalk, talking and laughing and also when they’re all seated on the couch. Additionally, in the world where the three women are living the lives that play out the meaning behind the song, they occasionally have cutaways.

Camera Movements:
Tracking shot and zoom. This is what follows the life of the three women.

Sound:
The sound used throughout this music video is dialogue that can not be heard through non-diegetic sound, sound bridge and imperial sound.

1. Costumes: The maximum length for our music video must be 1 min. and 15 seconds, because of this my team mates and I only studied 1min. and 15seconds for the music video that belongs to the chosen song. Within the first and only scene that we watched, we were introduced to a female group (the artist’s  of this song). First one is Beyonce, the lead singer. She is wearing a white tank top with short shorts, Kelly, the next one up, is seen walking into the room wearing a fur coat covering her whole body, looking fierce. Michele then comes in wearing a cardigan with a tank top and cargo cargo pants carrying Kelly’s luggage.
2. Lighting: Within the short clip that we watched, there are three different settings. Outside at the restuarant and the scene of the group of women walking down the street with interlocked elbows was obviously filmed with natural lighting. In the house, the lighting is a golden dim type lighting.
3. Acting: As stated before, there are three different settings of the video. In each setting, the group of women are doing something different. When seated in the restuarant, there is dialogue which cannot be heard by the viewers through non-diegetic sound. Within the scene where they are walking down the sidewalk, singing along to the song. At home, it shows them simply watching TV with nothing but shocked facial expressions to give the illusion of a juicy gossip show.
4. Make-Up: In the video, the three have on light make up. They also have on little to no jewelry.
5. Props: The props in the video may include the computer, wine glasses, menus and silverware seen in the restuarant.
6. Settings: Within this short clip of the video, there are 3 different settings. One is shot with the three women at home in comfortable clothing, next scene is shot with them in a place that seems to be New York City. This clip shows the life they’re watching on TV at home. Third clip is all three woman dressed up in professional attire walking down the sidewalk with interlocked elbows.

them being in the restaurant to walking on the strip. In the restaurant, it shows a reaction shot where the girls are singing dialogue.

Final Editing Blog

The time has come. Our commercial is done. I must say this moment is a little bitter sweet as I really did enjoy the time we’ve spent filming. The editing process had to be the toughest part but we got through it. My team mates made the process even better. We knew to be serious as this project is very important but we also knew to let the good times be good times and enjoy them. Laughing throughout the funny moments when the cameras were off and becoming an actor as soon as the cameras were on. I call that balance. Overall, I think my very first commercial, filmed by myself at certain parts, came out really good. I couldn’t be more proud and hopefully, once you guys see it (coming soon) you’ll like it just as much as I do and understand the concept behind it. I did my best to make the scenario seem realistic. I can admit that I wasn’t always present throughout this entire project but I did make sure that my team mates knew that I was reliable. Even if not physically present, they had access to my phone number and knew that they could use it at any given time if they had a question that they felt I could’ve answered.
As I stated earlier, the editing process was the toughest part throughout all this. The editing software we had to use, Pinnacle Studios, was not always cooperative. At some point, it was completely crashing down on us and we had no idea what to do. After many answered questions, we got some type of clue  as to how this editing app really works. Don’t you just love the “undo” button? Yeah, I do too.  That saved my team mates and I a ton.  Additionally, the amount of time our commercial had to be was another stressful factor. When I stated earlier that Pinnacle Studios was completely crashing down on us, I meant that the “cut” part wasn’t working. This section is the section we use to cut out any part of the commercial  that we no longer want to incorporate. We really struggled getting the commercial to shorten to 30 seconds. Even the nanoseconds of the commercial wanted spotlight but we couldn’t even let it go that far. Thankfully, we got to cut certain parts out and make our commercial fit within the 30 second threshold.
Overall, this was a fun project. I liked the freedom we had to kind of do whatever we want all while remaining within the rule guidelines. The only downside is the fact that my team mates and I didn’t get to use our tripod. For some reason, one leg just wouldn’t  extend out like all the others. This was a bummer as I was really looking forward to using it. Nevertheless though, we didn’t let this stop us. True enough, all of our shots are hand held but we made sure to incorporate different editing techniques and angles. Until next time lovely readers. I’ll be back sooner than you think with another epic filming project. Stay Tuned.
